Patrick Knives
Pat Randall

I started making knives when the handle of my favorite
kitchen knife broke.  After shaping a handle to fit my
large hands I thought about the blade and other
aspects.  I still have that knife and although the handle
was not well made I still use it nearly every day and
really like how well it works.

Everything evolved from there, leading to researching
steel, handle materials and methods of construction.  I
soon was working on a shop knife, then a primitive knife
using a animal horn I found in the desert.

When people learned that I made knives they would ask
to see my work, I could not show them if I was away
from the house so about a year ago I had some time in
the Winter and I thought I would make a folding knife.  I
had a large Western folder which had a broken blade.  I
really liked the knife and so took it apart and started
building a new one (See Western below and in Gallery).
I have now made many folding knives but not many of
the Western Design.

A statement from another knife maker really struck
home "I have over 200 knives in my collection, 199 and
made by me".  I was really in the same position so I
decided to give away many to my friends.  I looked at
what they may need and how they may use it and gave
them a knife to help meet that need.  I have regular
discussions with them to see how the knives are holding
up.  Two things became apparent, they loved the
attention they get when using a custom knife, and are
amazed how long the knife will stay sharp.  If fact most
are so used to using a dull knife I have to beg the knife
back to resharpen.
